About us

All microbes, all the time

Enviromics Research Group is part of the Geomicrobiology, Enviromics, and Microbial Markets (GEMM) labs. Led by Dr. Srijak Bhatnagar, the group spans two universities – Athabasca University and the University of Calgary.

We are dedicated to exploring the intricate relationships between microbes and their environments using cutting-edge DNA-based tools. The group investigates microbial communities across diverse ecosystems to understand the impacts of human-associated disturbances. With a strong focus on environmental restoration and remediation, the team applies molecular techniques to develop microbial indicators of disturbances and microbial solutions for ecological challenges.

Beyond research, the group is committed to science outreach, knowledge mobilization, and knowledge action – actively engaging with communities, schools students, and universities to spread the gospel of microbes, translate science, and foster collaborations for real-world applications.

Plastisphere

Microplastics are an environmental niche found everywhere on the planet. They are home to a diversity of microbes. We are learning about the ecology and role of these microbes and the factors that shape this microbiome – called plastisphere

Labrador Tea

A medicinal plant to Indigenous peoples around North America, Lab tea is threatened by forestry practices of clear-cutting and herbicide spraying. So can its microbiome serve as a bioindicator of such disturbances!

Genomics for the Arctic

Genomics and DNA-based tools can provide valuable information for species in an environment. So how can they be part of policy and decision-making to foster Arctic Biodiversity and Indigenous Food Security!!
